Rikki de Groot – Owner, A1 Mechanical
A1 Mechanical is built on a simple belief — vehicles should be reliable, and customers should be able to trust the workshop working on them.
Owner Rikki de Groot has spent more than 15 years in the automotive and heavy equipment industry, beginning his career as a qualified mechanic before moving into large-scale mining and maintenance operations across Western Australia.
Working with major resource companies including BHP, Rio Tinto and Epiroc, Rikki gained extensive experience maintaining and managing some of the hardest-working equipment in Australia. In these environments, reliability isn’t optional — it’s critical. Machines must perform in extreme conditions, and maintenance systems must be precise, preventative, and built around keeping assets operating when they are needed most.
Over the years, Rikki progressed into senior operational leadership roles, managing large teams, overseeing maintenance programs, and coordinating complex fleet operations. His focus was always the same — improving reliability, diagnosing problems properly, and ensuring equipment was maintained to the highest standard.
Despite the scale of the industry he worked in, Rikki always wanted to bring that same reliability-focused mindset back to a local mechanical workshop.
In August 2025, that opportunity came when he purchased the well-established A1 Mechanical workshop in Bungalow, Cairns.
Since then, Rikki has been focused on evolving A1 Mechanical into a workshop that reflects the same standards he worked with in large-scale operations — strong diagnostics capability, preventative maintenance, and a commitment to doing the job properly.
Today, A1 Mechanical has developed a strong reputation for specialising in:
