A 4WD that sits level in the driveway can still be badly set up for the job once the canopy is full, the boat is on the hitch and the corrugations begin. The coil springs versus airbags decision is not about fitting the toughest-looking suspension. It is about keeping your vehicle stable, controllable and reliable when heat, distance, rough roads and heavy loads are part of normal life in Far North Queensland.
For some owners, quality coils are the right long-term answer. For others, airbags make sense as a way to manage changing loads. The best choice depends on how the vehicle is used, what it weighs when loaded, and whether the whole suspension system is suited to that work.
What coil springs do well
Coil springs carry the vehicle’s weight at each corner and establish its normal ride height. Their spring rate determines how much they compress under load. A standard-rate coil is designed for a largely standard vehicle. Add a steel bull bar, winch, long-range tank, drawers, fridge, rooftop tent or permanent work gear and that original spring can sag well below where it should operate.
A properly selected heavy-duty or constant-load coil is designed around known, ongoing weight. It holds the vehicle at a more appropriate height, improves available suspension travel and helps keep alignment angles within a sensible range. On a touring 4WD with permanent accessories, this provides a predictable setup every day, not just when the vehicle is loaded for a trip.
Coils are also mechanically simple. There are no airlines, fittings or compressors to inspect, and a quality spring is well suited to vehicles that spend plenty of time on corrugated roads. That simplicity matters when you are a long way from help.
The trade-off is ride comfort when the vehicle is empty. A coil chosen for a constant 300 kg of gear can feel firm or unsettled if that gear is not actually there. Over-springing a vehicle is a common mistake. It may look level, but it can reduce comfort, traction and control over rough surfaces.
Springs need matched dampers
A spring upgrade should not be treated as a spring-only job. Shock absorbers control how quickly the suspension moves. If springs are firmer or ride height is increased, dampers need suitable valving and travel to manage that change. Worn or mismatched shocks can cause bouncing, poor braking stability, scalloped tyres and a vehicle that becomes tiring to drive.
On a 4WD used for Cape York travel, towing or fleet work, the right combination of springs, dampers, bushes and wheel alignment is far more valuable than chasing maximum lift. Reliable suspension is about controlled movement and correct geometry.
When airbags are the better fit
Airbags are most commonly fitted inside rear coil springs or alongside rear leaf springs as load-assist devices. Their key advantage is adjustability. Add air before hooking up a caravan, loading tools into the ute or carrying a full complement of passengers, then reduce pressure when the vehicle returns to lighter duties.
That makes airbags useful for vehicles with highly variable loads. A dual-cab used as a family car during the week and a workhorse or tow rig on weekends is a typical example. Rather than living with overly firm rear springs all the time, airbags can provide extra support when it is genuinely needed.
They can help restore a level stance, reduce rear-end squat and improve headlight aim when loaded. They may also reduce body roll and improve the way a vehicle feels under towing load. But they do not change the vehicle’s legal carrying capacity, tow rating, axle rating or tyre rating. They are a load-levelling aid, not permission to carry more than the vehicle is approved for.
This point is worth making plainly. If a ute is over its rear axle limit, inflating airbags does not make it safe or legal. The load must be weighed properly, including passengers, accessories, fuel, tools, towball download and anything stored behind the rear axle.
Airbags have maintenance needs
A quality airbag kit can work very well, but it has more components than a coil spring. Airline routing, fittings, brackets and bags need to be installed carefully and checked during servicing. Stone damage, rubbing, heat exposure, loose fittings and slow leaks can cause trouble, particularly on rough roads.
A compressor and in-cab controls add convenience, but also add complexity. Manual inflation valves are simpler and often adequate for drivers who only adjust pressure occasionally. Either way, the system should be set up so it cannot rub, snag or interfere with suspension travel.
Airbags must also be run within the manufacturer’s stated pressure range. Running too little pressure can damage the bag, while too much pressure can make the rear suspension overly stiff and transfer harsh loads through the chassis and body. More air is not automatically better.
Coil springs versus airbags: the practical choice
The right choice usually becomes clearer once the vehicle is honestly assessed in its normal working condition.
If your 4WD carries permanent weight, such as a canopy, service body, drawers, recovery gear, fridge, dual batteries and touring equipment, a correctly rated coil and shock package is generally the stronger foundation. It supports the constant load without relying on adjustable assistance to compensate for sagging standard springs.
If the vehicle is lightly loaded most of the time but occasionally tows or carries a substantial load, standard or moderate-rate springs with airbags may offer better flexibility. This can preserve a more comfortable unloaded ride while still providing support for those heavier weekends or work runs.
For many vehicles, the answer is both. Correct-rate coils support the vehicle’s regular load, while airbags provide modest adjustment for variable towing or seasonal equipment. This arrangement only works when the airbags are treated as assistance, not as a way to mask springs that are too soft for the vehicle’s permanent weight.
Leaf-spring rear suspension follows the same principle. Airbags can assist a leaf pack under temporary load, but tired, flat or broken leaves need proper repair or replacement. A bag cannot fix worn-out suspension components.
Avoid using ride height as the only measure
A level vehicle is not necessarily a well-set-up vehicle. Suspension selection should start with actual weights and intended use, not how much lift a kit advertises. Measure the vehicle in touring or work trim, then consider front and rear axle loads separately.
Excessive lift can create issues with steering geometry, CV joint angles, brake lines, tailshafts, tyre clearance and handling. It can also complicate wheel alignment and increase component wear. In Queensland, suspension and GVM-related modifications must be suitable for the vehicle and comply with applicable approval requirements. Some changes require engineering or certification, so it pays to get advice before buying parts.
The same goes for towing. A heavy towball load removes weight from the front axle while loading the rear. Airbags may bring the rear back up, but they cannot put steering grip back where it has been taken away or correct poor trailer loading. Towball mass, trailer balance, tyre pressures and a correctly rated hitch all matter.

A good setup should leave enough suspension travel, maintain sensible ride height and keep the tyres working properly on the road. After suspension work, a precision wheel alignment is not an optional extra. It is part of protecting tyre life, steering feel and safe handling.
For fleet vehicles, this assessment can prevent repeat failures. A vehicle that carries tools or equipment every day needs a suspension package built for that daily weight. Replacing failed components with standard parts may be cheaper at the counter, but it often means the same issue returns under the same workload.
Before choosing coils, airbags or a combined setup, load the vehicle as it is genuinely used and have the weights checked. The best suspension is the one that keeps your 4WD composed, legal and dependable long after the bitumen ends.
